HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Daily Star) 2016/11/17 – “She is sweet, she is nice, she is protective of her family,” says An American Girl Story star Marisai Martin. “She has courage in herself, strength and love.” Martin also stars on the ABC show Black-ish, as Diane Johnson.
“Melody is a very inspiring tale of a child who still found a way to make her voice heard,” says An American Girl Story star Idara Victor. “Even if it was in a small way that can create a larger effect. It can be a story that children can watch and relate to and then see how they themselves individually themselves can make their voices heard.”
“In writing this I asked myself what would have engaged an entertained me when I was this age,” says writer Alison McDonald. “Children already have a natural curiosity, my role is to hold up a mirror to society and engage young viewers to ask questions, but I also want to entertain them. When girls watch this film I want them to know that within themselves they hold hope for the future. They are the embodiment of hope. Their voices as small and perhaps even insignificant as they may seem are very powerful.”
In An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win, Marsai Martin is Melody, a smart 10-year-old African-American girl living in Detroit during the Civil Rights Movement. Harsh racism surrounds her home and neighborhood.
Francis Fisher is Miss Abbot, Melody’s school teacher. Abbot is faced with a challenge when Melody questions the validity of the term “indivisible.” Melody feels it is an elusive promise to the country after the Birmingham Church Bombings.
Unwilling to let adversity define her, Melody embarks on a journey to spread hope and positivity. Her mother’s encouragement supports her as she compassionately reaches for her dreams of unity.
