HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Daily Star) 2017/02/19 – “A year later, after the good wife ends,” says The Good Fight star Christine Baranski. “She gets herself back together, living an independent life, she gets her firm back, better than ever, she has eight name partners on a wall, and she is ready to retire. And it’s not even halfway through the pilot that all goes south. It’s a spectacular fall from grace.”
“CBS All Access has built tremendous momentum in the past year,” CBS president and COO Marc DeBevoise. “Passing one million subscribers, launching our first original with Big Brother: Over the Top and, most recently, bringing live NFL on CBS programming to the service. We’re continuing this momentum with the upcoming launch of The Good Fight which promises to not only deliver more ambitious premium programming for our subscribers but an opportunity for world-class creators like Robert and Michelle King to push the envelope in new ways.”
“It was the hardest work I’ve ever had to do in a film,” says Baranski “How do you do when pretty much everything that defined you is taken out from under you? You have no job, your old firm won’t let you back, you lose your money, it’s been locked up, your assets are frozen, you’ve been told you have to sub lent your apartment, you can’t quit work and her marriage is on the rocks.”
“It’s what happens to people when they lose their foundation,” says Baranski “And I think it’s happening in such an interesting time, culturally. This pilot that we are doing, that we are shooting at a time when the country collectively feels perhaps that we are in free fall. I think the psychological journey of Diane and her goddaughter will reflect a lot of the collective insecurity of people watching the show.”
“At any point in your life you might have to begin again and redefine what’s important for you,” says Baranski regarding the new spinoff’s title. “And you might have to start up again and fight a good fight. And in terms of the age, we are living in now, we have to, women have to continue a good fight, we thought we were going to break a glass ceiling. It didn’t happen, it’s not going to be a women president, putting a hand on the bible and women will have to continue. It seems now that women are going to have to continue a good fight, and find the energy to fight a good fight.”
The Good Fight is CBS All Access’ first original drama series. It follows fall’s launch of the service’s first reality series, a digital-only edition Big Brother: Over the Top. CBS All Access will debut its second original, scripted series, Star Trek: Discovery in May 2017 and continue to expand its lineup of original series with additional programming to be announced.
