HOLLYWOOD, CA 2017/4/7 – “How clean are my jokes?” says Tell the Damn Joke star Steve Byrne. “Well, I haven’t done a late night talk show set for quite some time, so I guess not very. I don’t try to reinvent the wheel. I have the set up and then hopefully the twist is good enough to get a laugh out of the crowd.”
“Dean Martin, that’s my guy,” says Byrne. “He had such an easy-going, cool presence. I’ll never be that cool, but that’s who I look up to. He was so quick on his feet. I adore the man in terms of a stand-up. If it’s funny, it’s funny. I love Brian Regan as much as I love Chris Rock.”
A comic, husband and dad, Steve Byrne brings his signature stand-up style to Chicago in a Showtime comedy special. Why Chicago? Why Showtime?
“I chose Chicago because it’s a city synonymous with comedy,” says Byrne. “I lived in Bucktown [one of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods] for three years and love the city. I love hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches and basically eating like an 8th grade roller skating party. Chicago has it all. I chose Showtime because they said yes.”
Byrne’s started in comedy in 1997. “The sensitivity factor, the offensive factor is so much more magnified than when I started,” says Byrne. “We’re slowly losing the ability to laugh at ourselves or with each other. You should be held accountable for your actions, not jokes.”
Steve Byrne brings his signature style to Chicago for his new special, Tell the Damn Joke. With a memorable introduction from his family to his signature blues-guitar sign-off, Byrne holds no punches, calls it like it is and tells the damn jokes.
