Budapest, Hungary – Antonio Banderas stars as Pablo Picasso in Season 2 of National Geographic’s Genius (National Geographic/Dusan Martincek)

Premier of season 2 of Genius presents Picasso, on National Geographic channel on Tuesday April 24th, 2018. at 6pm PT / 9pm ET on DirecTV

HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Daily Star) 2018/4/24 – “It was important for me because Picasso has been a very important figure in my life,” says Genius star Antonio Banderas. “You have to think when I was going to school when I was a little kid with the hand of my mother, we always cross in front of Picasso’s house where Picasso was born. And, you know, I am talking about a time in Spain in which we didn’t have too many international heroes, so Picasso trespassed, you know, that barrier at a time in which we were pretty much isolated by the dictatorship that we were living in with Francisco Franco in power.”

Banderas and Picasso were born in the same town, Málaga.

“I was offered to play Picasso, that I remember, a couple of times in my life, but I said no,” says Banderas. “This time I felt it was the right time. I said no before because it was a big sense of responsibility that it came to me that are for whatever reason I didn’t want to accept in other times of my life.”

“First of all, you know, it was a lot of responsibility,” says Banderas. “That is one of those things that happened when you play a character that already existed. It happened to me a couple times in my life before. But in this particular case, I have to be very careful for the reason that if I don’t portray him properly, I may not be able to go back to my hometown.”

The second season of Genius on Nat Geo premieres with Pablo Picasso, his work, life and many mistresses. There is smoking in the series, unfortunately. The first season covered Albert Einstein his affairs and his work. The two were born two years apart and both had to deal with the Nazis. The story moves back and forth in time from when Picasso was younger to older. Women loved him and he loved women until he didn’t. They went from goddess to doormat.

Picasso is a celebrated artist of the 20th century. His art work is imaginative and people view his artwork in different ways. Genius explores the Spanish-born artist’s creativity and the link between his artistry and his passionate affairs. The artist was married a number of time and had many affairs. His loyalties moved with the wind. No one could predict what  he would say or do.

This series focuses more on their personal lives then their genius. In the first season with Einstein it was a little bit more about his work then his love life. Picasso is mostly about his many mistresses and less about how he created his art. Artists are often excused for their passionate nature.

Filmed in Spain and France, in and around Barcelona, Málaga, and Paris. Genius is executive produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
