Drama follows a high school theater department in trouble, premieres March 13th, 2018 at 10 pm
HOLLYWOOD, CA (Hollywood Daily Star) 2018/3/13 – “I feel like, if my life has been blessed in any way, I’ve just had multiple teachers and mentors in my life that have come along at just the right moments starting in high school,” says Rise star Josh Radnor. “I started acting in musicals in a public high school in the Midwest, so I really understood this world. I mean, some the role I did before. This was on PBS for a show called Mercy Street where I played a surgeon in the Civil War, and I had to really throw myself into research, you know. This didn’t require that much research just because this is the world I grew up in, I understood it.”
Rise follows the season finale of This is Us.
Rise the new NBC show that is a drama with music. At first glance, it feels like a darker Glee. Many have compared it to Friday Night Lights since it from Jason Katims the producer of Friday Night Lights. Yes, there is football in the show. Yes, it’s about teens, but it is also about the music department the teachers and the kids parents. When lots of the arts programs at schools have been cut it’s trying to shine a light on the loss of theater, music and arts in schools. The show is very loosely based on the nonfiction book Drama High by Michael Sokolove.
Auli’i Cravalho as Lilette Suarez, comes from the wrong side of the tracks and is embarrassed by her mother.
Damon J. Gillespie as Robbie Thorne, the school’s star quarterback whose coach doesn’t want him to be part of the music department.
Ted Sutherland as Simon Saunders, has very strict parents who are offended by the material in the musical Spring Awakening.
Josh Radnor as Lou Mazzuchelli, the teacher who’s taken over running the music program. He clashes with the former teacher in charge of the program.
Rosie Perez as Tracy Wolfe, who ran the program before and is at odds with the current teacher in charge. The two will need to learn to work together to keep the program alive. There are lots of songs and drama.
The difference between Rise and Glee is filming of Glee is tone. Where Glee was bright and light where Rise is darker with more drama.
